Campus Road Trip: Bristol Edition

The ultimate guide to student road trips in the UK. Here are our fave road trip destinations within a two hour drive of Bristol.

by Louise Thomas

Welcome to our latest series – Campus Road Trips. We’ll take you across the UK to every major university town and city. There are plenty of nightlife guides around, but we’re here to offer an alternative way of blowing off steam. This week we’re in Bristol!

There reaches a point in every student’s life, when you can’t face another social and your mum keeps telling you how tired you look. Face it. You need a break.

But fear not! Just because you’ve decided you need a weekend without Mbargos or Lizard Lounge (as it will always remain in our hearts), it doesn’t mean you can’t socialise. Borrow a car, share the driving and head somewhere different for some good, old-fashioned, wholesome fun.

Whether it’s a day trip with course friends, a road trip with housemates or romantic weekend with bae, we’ve got your plans sorted.

If you’ve only got one day…

Appreciate the natural beauty (and cheese) of Somerset

The village of Cheddar, famous for its gorge and cheese, is less than an hour away from the centre of Bristol.

Cheddar Gorge is a world famous beauty spot and National Nature Reserve.  There are awesome views of dramatic cliffs and mystical stalactite caverns beneath.

History and archaeology buffs can visit a replica of the Cheddar Man, Britain’s oldest complete skeleton. If you’re more James Bond than Indiana Jones you can get your adrenaline pumping and join an extreme cave tour.

Up your Instagram game with a visit to Westonbirt Arboretum.

Only a 40 minute drive from Bristol, The National Arboretum is a collection of beautiful trees and shrubs from across the world.

The grounds are spectacular all year round, you definitely won’t need a filter on your next post! Try taking a snap of the bird’s-eye view from the treetop walkway!

If you’ve got the whole weekend with friends…

Head to the beach

Weymouth is only a 1 hour 43 minute drive from Bristol, making it perfect for a seaside weekend with your pals. The beach can be enjoyed year round and there’s much more to do than hit the waves.

Hire a cottage and use it for your base as you explore the seaside town. Explore the quarry trail at Portland or take a walk along Chesil Beach. End your day at the pub or with fish and chips. What more could you want from the British seaside?

If you’re trying to impress…

Enjoy the countryside in the Wye Valley

If beaches aren’t your thing, why not head for a romantic weekend in the countryside? The Wye Valley stradldles the border between England and Wales and is an Area of Oustanding Natural Beauty.

Turn the weekend into a digital detox and enjoy one another’s company, strolling around the local area where you can stumble across old churches, castles and ruined abbeys. You can visit Hay-on-Wye to satisfy your inner book geek. Alternatively, make the most of being on the Welsh border and go for a hike in the Brecon Beacons.
