Frequently asked questions

  • opener

    What is Temporary Car Insurance?

Do you need to be added onto a family member’s policy for an airport run? Maybe you need to cover your new car before getting annual insurance. These are just a couple of ways Veygo temporary car insurance could be up your street.

We offer two types of temporary car insurance: temporary cover for your own car, and cover to share a friend or family’s car. If you’re sharing a car, the car needs to have an annual insurance policy in place already.

You can buy temporary car insurance for anything from 1 hour up to 60 days.

  • opener

I want to share the driving, but isn’t this dual insurance?

It’s not. Dual insurance is when the same person has two active insurance policies on the same vehicle.

As long as you’re not named on the car owner’s insurance, or any other insurance policy covering the car you want to drive (perhaps to learn in), this won’t affect your ability to take out temporary cover, and it won’t be dual insurance.

  • opener

I want to share the driving, but will it affect the car owner’s no claims bonus if I claim?

Nope. Our temp cover provides you with your own separate insurance for the car. Any claims you make won’t affect the car owner’s no-claims bonus, so they don’t need to declare it on their insurance.

  • opener

what is the policy excess? how much is it?

The accidental damage excess on most temporary car insurance is set at £750. Some customers can choose a lower excess of £250, depending on you and/or your car’s details. The excess for a windscreen claim can be found in your insurance policy schedule, within your account.

  • opener

Are there any restrictions on short-term cover?

In short, yes. Here's our basic age criteria...

    • We cover drivers with full GB licences from the age of 17
    • If you're 17 -21 and looking for cover on your own car, you need to have held your licence for at least 6 months
    • There's no minimum licence duration if you are borrowing a friend or family's car
    • For cars... we can't cover cars which are over 30 years old. Sorry!

As well as these basic age requirements, we have underwriting criteria, which are made up of lots of different factors. These criteria are used to work out your price, and if you're eligible for cover when you quote.

  • opener

How does the no claims discount work?

The no-claims bonus (NCB) rewards you for your driving. As soon as you’ve driven 30 days claim-free in a 12 month period with our temporary cover (excluding learner drivers), you’ll automatically get a discount on your Veygo quotes. This is just for temp cover, so can’t be transferred to an annual insurance policy.

  • opener

How do I extend my insurance policy?

Although we don’t currently offer insurance policy extensions, you can quickly take out more insurance online. We save your details to make the process even easier the second time around – just make sure you log in first!

  • opener

    Can I cancel my policy?

Of course. You can cancel your insurance policy via your account. Just go to ‘Purchases’, select the insurance policy you want to cancel, and hit ‘End Policy’. If the policy has been active 30 days or fewer, there won’t be any refund due. For full terms and conditions, check out our policy book for the type of cover you have (temporary car insurance or car sharing insurance).

Follow our step-by-step guide on how to cancel your insurance policy.

  • opener

Why have I been declined cover?

We know it can be frustrating to be declined when applying for insurance. Sadly we’re unable to provide specifics for each case.

It’s nothing personal, and hopefully we can help you in the future.

  • opener

Does temporary car insurance show up on ASKMID?

To give you peace of mind that you shouldn’t get pulled over for supposedly driving without insurance – yes, temporary cover shows up on askMID. But it can take up to a week for the cover to show on the Motor Insurance Database.

There should already be an annual insurance policy on the car if it’s a learner driver policy, or if you’re sharing a friend or family member’s car. All private vehicles need to be fully insured, and if there isn’t an annual policy in place, your cover won’t be valid. If that’s the case, please get in touch at to cancel.

  • opener

Can I use Veygo to drive abroad?

No, our insurance is only valid in England, Scotland and Wales.

  • opener

    How can I contact Veygo?

We’re an online-only business, so we don’t have a number for you to call. But if you'd prefer to speak to us over the phone, drop us an email or send us a message and we’ll aim to get back to you within 15 minutes, during our opening hours.

You can also contact us via Facebook Messenger or tweet us @VeygoUK.

See Veygo’s full contact details here.

  • opener

Can I get one day car insurance?

Yes. You can get one day insurance with our temp cover. It’s completely flexible from 1 hour up to 60 days.

  • opener

Can I get hourly car insurance?

You can get short-term insurance for as little as one hour. So if you just need to dash out for something quick, we’ve got you covered.

  • opener

Are there any limitations to when I can buy?

We have a block on hourly insurance between 10pm and 5am. Basically, if you need cover to start or end between 10pm and 5am, the duration of your policy needs to be at least 24 hours. But if your insurance is 24 hours or more then there is no curfew.

  • opener

How much does temporary car insurance cost?

It depends on a number of things, but you can check our estimated prices higher up on this page.

Get a temporary car insurance quote here.

  • opener

    Is short-term insurance tax deductible?

Our temp insurance is for personal use not for business use. If you’re driving for business-related purposes you may be able to claim back your insurance premium. Business-related purposes may include using your car to pick up or deliver business supplies or driving to visit clients. Simply commuting to and from work, however, does not count as a business-related purpose.

  • opener

Can you get temporary insurance for 17 year olds?

You can! If you’re insuring your own car, you’ll need to have held a licence for a minimum of 6 months. But if you’re borrowing someone else's car, we’ll cover you from the day you pass your test!

  • opener

Can someone drive my car if they are not on my insurance?

Most UK car insurance only covers the people named on the policy to drive the car they’re insuring. If someone wants to borrow your car, you can either add them as a named driver, or they can take out temporary insurance.

  • opener

What’s the shortest or longest time I can use temporary insurance?

The shortest amount of time you can insure a car with temporary insurance is just 1 hour. Then the longest Veygo will cover you is 60 days. The in-between is totally up to you – it’s fully flexible.

  • opener

If I’ve just bought a car, can I drive it home without insurance?

No – definitely don’t do this! Driving without insurance is against the law, and can land you in serious hot water. If you need to get your new wheels home, temporary insurance can cover you short-term, and then you can spend a little longer shopping for the right annual policy.

  • opener

Can I tax a car if I have temporary insurance?

Actually, yes – you can. You can tax your vehicle with a temporary policy at the DVLA website. Or, if you want to go old-school, you can take your temporary insurance docs to the post office.
