Frequently Asked Questions for Learner Driver Insurance

Frequently asked questions

What is Learner Driver Insurance?

As a provisional licence holder, you can get valuable on-road experience with the help of Veygo learner driver insurance. You can choose to be covered by the hour, day, week or month and you can get a quote in under 2 minutes.

Isn’t this dual insurance?

No. Dual insurance is when the same person has two active polices on the same vehicle. As long as you’re not named on the car owner’s policy, or any other policy covering the car you want to learn in, you will not affect the existing cover and it won’t be dual insurance.

Can I use Veygo to take my practical test?

Yes. You may be asked to take a copy of your Certificate of Insurance with you, which is available to download as a PDF document within your Veygo account. Please login, select “My account” and then “Purchases”. Important: if you pass your test, the policy will no longer be valid as it only covers provisional licence holders, so you won’t be able to drive home from the test centre. You’ll then be able to quote for our Temporary Cover if you continue sharing the car. Good luck!

Our policy documents state you are not covered for use in the participation of a test, but please be assured this is not relating to the driving test, but relating to test drives and car performance tests.

Who is the owner of the car?

We consider the owner of the car to be the registered keeper so whoever’s name is on the V5c… logbook to you and me.

What are the alternative insurance requirements?
The vehicle needs to be alternatively insured if you are borrowing it from a family member, friend or colleague. You cannot be a named driver on the alternative insurance policy.

Will it affect the car owner’s no claims bonus if I claim?

No. Learner driver Insurance provides you with your own separate policy for the car. If you’re borrowing someone else’s car, any claims you make won’t affect the car owner’s No Claims Bonus, so they don’t need to declare it on their insurance.

How much is the excess?

There’s a compulsory excess of £250 on the policy if you need to make a claim. The excess for a windscreen claim can be found in your policy schedule, within your account.

Who can supervise me when I drive?

Any driver over 21 who has held a current and valid full licence for at least three years (from countries in the EU and EEC) can supervise a learner driver. They must be qualified to drive the type of vehicle the learner is practising in, so an automatic licence holder cannot supervise someone in a manual vehicle.

Can I insure a lease car?

Yes – we provide cover to private lease cars. When doing a quote, you just need to enter the owner’s details as the person whose name the lease is in. However, don’t forget if you are sharing or borrowing someone else’s vehicle; there needs to be alternative insurance in place.

Can I add another driver or car to my policy?

Another driver or car can’t be added to your existing insurance policy, but you can buy a separate insurance policy for the other driver or car you wish to insure. When purchasing for another driver, they’ll need to continue as a new customer and create their own account with an alternative email address. Easy.

Can I insure a car that doesn’t have MOT?

It’s possible to drive your car to a garage to have a MOT, even if it doesn’t have a valid MOT certificate. However, you must have a pre-booked test, the correct insurance to cover your journey and your car must be roadworthy. You can find more information on how to check if your vehicle is roadworthy here.

Can I insure a car that doesn’t have Tax?

Yes, it’s possible to insure your car without valid tax, just remember your car must be taxed to legally be on the road. If you declare your car as ‘off road’, then you don’t need to tax or insure it. However, you may want to otherwise your car will have no fire, theft and vandalism insurance, so any damage to your car would have to be paid by yourself.

I have an automatic licence but I’m learning to drive a manual

We’re unable to provide learner driver insurance to someone that already has a full driving licence, sorry. Our website will recognise your driving licence as full and you’ll then be unable to buy insurance that’s only for provisional licence holders.

How do I extend my policy?

Although we don’t currently offer policy extensions, you can quickly take out a new policy online. We save your details to make the process even easier the second time around – just make sure you log in first!

How can I cancel my policy?

Follow our step by step article on how to cancel your policy

Why have I been declined cover?

We would love to cover everyone but unfortunately, our underwriting criteria means that sometimes we can’t offer insurance to somebody. We can’t give specifics, but it’s made up of lots of different factors, like car, age, experience, claims and motor conviction history, and much more. Also, we don’t offer cover for outside of Great Britain, drivers with a non-GB licence or non-GB residents. Our Customer Care team won’t be able to help you with this either, sorry.

Why isn’t my policy showing on MID?

It takes up to a week for the cover to show on the Motor Insurance Database. There should already be an insurance policy on the car if you’re sharing a friend or family member’s car. If there isn’t a policy in place, your cover won’t be valid. Please follow the relevant steps here to cancel.

Can I use Veygo to drive abroad?

Our comprehensive cover extends to driving in England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland*. However, when driving abroad, your policy will cover the minimum level of cover needed for the country that you’re driving in.

*If your Northern Irish licence is a 6-digit licence unfortunately, we do not offer cover.
