5 Things You Wish You Could Insure

How many times have you lent something to a friend, only to have it returned in worse condition? Imagine how great it would be if you could insure everything you lend or borrow.

by Louise Thomas

The bard himself once wrote “neither a borrower nor a lender be”. This is arguably sensible advice when it comes to money but it doesn’t quit work all the time. After all, who doesn’t share clothes with sisters or housemates, borrow books from friends, or lend your neighbour the occasional power tool?

1. Books

Bookworms often find themselves recommending their favourite reads to friends. Watching them browse your bookshelf makes you proud but nervous. The browsing is almost always followed by “Can I borrow this book?” Lending out books can be seriously risky: they might come back bent, battered, and coffee stained — or worse, they don’t come back at all!

2. Clothes

The biggest perk of having stylish friends is borrowing their clothes. Having friends the same size means that if you share clothes, your wardrobe is doubled for free! However, the shared wardrobe can also cause tension in the squad. Remember that time your white dress was returned with a red wine stain? Or your top was ripped before you even had the chance to wear it? We dream of the day we can guarantee our threads are returned as they were borrowed.

3. Camping Gear

Camping gear is expensive and a big investment if you’re only going to use it once. If you’re a seasoned camper, you’ve probably offered to lend gear to your friends to save them a pretty penny. They’re off on an adventure – great! Them returning your tent without drying it out, or with missing pegs? Less great. You probably won’t even realise until you next use it yourself when it’s too late.

4. Power Tools

Do you really need a tool to clean your gutters in the autumn, or a pressure washer that you only crack out it the spring? Chances are you own tools you only use once or twice a year, and so do your friends!  Borrowing tools from neighbours, or lending them to friends is a great way to save space and money. Nevertheless, they are useful and expensive, and there’s nothing more annoying than someone returning your tools and finding they no longer work.

5. DVDs and Games

Sharing is caring right? As a good friend you’ve probably loaned your mates plenty of DVDs and games over the years, and you’ve almost definitely borrowed theirs. Lending out those fragile little disks is risky business! More often than not you get them back with scratches or your friend keeps it so long you have to borrow it back!
